Land Rover Defender 90 Yachting Edition
Land Rover Defender 90 Yachting EditionCruising its way to the Essen Motor Show floors, is the sea-flavored Land Rover Defender 90 Yachting Edition, created by Brabus affiliate Startech. And while it ain't an amphibious off-roader, this Defender takes its styling inspiration from -you guessed it- maritime themes.

Finished in a bright white color, the Defender 90 Yachting Edition rolls on 16-inch alloys wrapped around in wider tires measuring 267/75 R16. Complementing the 4x4's looks are new running boards with integrated entrance lights that are activated via the keyless fob or by opening one of the doors, an SVX grille and body-colored headlight covers.

Greater emphasis has been given to the nautical-themed cabin. The crew of Startech's Defender are greeted by a yacht-like wood flooring and navy-blue leather with contrasting white stitching covering with the doors, dashboard, center console and Recaro sport seats. In addition, the shells of the seatbacks are painted white to match the exterior while the headliner is made from Alcantara finished in navy-blue.

A sport steering wheel, aluminum pedals and high-end infotainment system round up the interior appointments.

Hyundai Azera

Hyundai Azera
Hyundai Azera
Hyundai AzeraWe recently got our first official sneak peak at the upcoming 2012 Hyundai Azera, but the South Korean automaker keeps dropping new information and pictures on its mid-size sedan that will take its place between the Sonata and the Genesis. This time we have details on the engine options for the KDM version, which will continue to use the Grandeur nameplate.

In South Korea, the Azera will be offered with a choice of two naturally aspirated engines, both featuring direct-injection technology. The base model will be powered by the same 2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder gasoline unit found on the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima, while the flagship version will be motivated by a 3.0-liter GDi V6 delivering 270HP and 31.6 kg/m of peak torque.

The company states on the official brochure that the four-cylinder model will return an average fuel consumption of 12.8 km/lt (equal to 30.1 mpg US and 7.8 lt/100km), while the V6, 11.6 km/lt (27.3 mpg US or 8.6 lt/100km).

Hyundai has not made any comments or announcements regarding the powertrain options for the North American version of the Azera, though likely it will be offered exclusively with V6 engines. Recently, the South Korean automaker said that the Azera may get its North American debut at the New York Auto Show next April.

Nissan Sunny

Nissan Sunny
Nissan Sunny
Nissan SunnyTaking center stage and making its world debut at the 8th China (Guangzhou) International Automobile Exhibition, is Nissan's all-new global small sedan, which will be locally marketed as the Sunny. According to the Japanese automaker, the new small sedan will go on sale first in China in January 2011 and then progressively across 170 countries worldwide under different vehicle brand names.

Even though Nissan's Spartan press release did not mention the Versa, there are one too many styling similarities between the new Sunny and the 2012 Versa sedan teased in an official sketch released by the automaker in October 2010. However, we have to stress the fact that Nissan has not made a connection between the two cars.

The Sunny, or as Nissan likes to call it, the firm's new global sedan, is believed to be based on the underpinnings of the Micra supermini, something that could explain the striking resemblance of the dashboard design.

Among the few details released about the car is that in China, it will be offered with Nissan's 1.5-liter HR15DE four-cylinder engine linked to Xtronic CVT, and that engineers have fitted the Sunny with MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam for the rear suspension.

The All-New Ford Ranger

The All-New Ford Ranger
The All-New Ford Ranger
The All-New Ford RangerThe wraps are off the all-new for 2011, Ford Ranger pickup truck which makes its worldwide debut at this week's Australian International Motor Show in Sydney before going on sale in 180 markets around the world but not -you guessed it- in the USA.

Like its predecessor, Ford's new Ranger was developed in cooperation with Mazda, which will also unveil its version of the compact pickup truck called the BT-50 in Sydney.

The new Ranger moves a step closer to passenger cars in terms of styling, interior appointments as well as technology features. It will be available in three different cab body styles, 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains, two ride heights and four series choices.

It is powered by a choice of two new common rail Ford Duratorq TDCi diesels, a 2.2-liter TDCi four-cylinder unit with 150HP and 375Nm [277 lb-ft], or a 3.2-liter TDCi inline-five rated at 200HP and 470Nm [347 lb-ft], and new six-speed automatic and manual transmissions.

The 4WD models are equipped with an electronically controlled transfer case that allows drivers to shift from 4x2 to 4x4 through an electronic switch located on the console, while low range gearing can also be enabled.

Ford said that the cargo box of the new Double Cab is more than 100mm wider than before - 1,549mm long by 511mm high and with a maximum cargo width of 1,560mm. Volume is rated at 1.21 cubic meters.

All Ranger models will come equipped with a new Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system that includes four-wheel traction control, yaw control and roll-over mitigation, as standard. Other new technologies include Rear Park Assist and new Rearview Camera system, plus the availability of side curtain airbags on all cab styles for the first time.

Stephen Odell, chairman and CEO, Ford of Europe, said: "The new Ranger is an exciting and dynamic vehicle that will undoubtedly raise the bar in the pickup market. The scope of its capability and technology are further evidence of how powerful the One Ford initiative is in helping us globally to develop a whole range of all-new class-leading vehicles. We look forward to bringing new Ranger to European customers by 2012 and I am confident it will exceed their expectations."

The new Ford Ranger will be built at three sites with series production scheduled to begin next summer, initially in Rayong, Thailand. Ford said it is also planning to manufacture the new pickup truck at its plants in Argentina and South Africa.

The All-New Mazda BT-50

The All-New Mazda BT-50
The All-New Mazda BT-50
The All-New Mazda BT-50Mazda released the first photos of the all-new BT-50. As we've mentioned many times before, the two pickup truck models are the result of a collaboration between Ford and Mazda and will both get their world premiere at this week's Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.

The Japanese automaker's iteration of the compact pickup truck theme gets its own unique exterior cues and interior styling inspired by the firm's passenger car range. Though far less aggressive than originally implied on the first teaser sketches, the BT-50's exterior design is more funky than it's Ford sibling. The same can be said about the interior which is said to feature all the accommodations of a passenger car.

Here's what Mazda had to say about the new BT-50 in its teaser press release:

"It offers all the functionality required for business use combined with passenger car-like comfort for family use; and for active customers in Australia and Europe, it is the perfect answer for all kinds of outdoor leisure activities.

"With modern and refined styling both inside and out, the All-New Mazda BT-50 will raise the bar in the utility segment and for the first time provide a realistic alternative to the family wagon and 4x4 SUV."

Chrysler has officially unveiled the new 2011 300 model, which is completely different than 300C model.
2011 Chrysler 300 features a new grille, LED-infused headlights, a rakish windscreen, and nice bodywork. To improve the aerodynamics and the visibility, the engineers took the windshield back with 3 inches, while the rolled-framed doors with thinner pillars improved outward visibility by 15 percent. A new dual-pane panoramic sunroof is available, which provides twice the outward visibility of a standard sunroof.
The interior boasts better quality of the materials, but the design is very familiar. However, among the options list, there are heated and cooled Nappa leather seats, a two-piece sunroof, and Uconnect Touch with an 8.4″ screen, which gives all information that you need.
The new Chrysler 300 is powered by either 3.6 liter V6 with 296PS (218 kW) and 353Nm (260 lb-ft) or 5.7 liter HEMI V8 with 375PS (276 kW) and 536Nm (395 lb-ft). Both engines are mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox. The rear-wheel-drive is standard, while the AWD will be optional extra.

The Willys Pickup

The Willys Pickup
The Willys Pickup
The Willys PickupThe Willys Pickup was similar to the Willys Jeep Wagon and the VJ-2 and VJ-3 Willys Jeepster. It was introduced in 1947, with model designations of 2T and 4T. These trucks were equipped with the 134 cubic inch "Go-Devil" engine and the three-speed Borg-Warner T-90 manual transmission from the CJ-2A. The truck received a facelift in 1950 and became the 473, with the new "Hurricane" four-cylinder engine as an option. This model introduced the v-shaped front end with five horizontal bars, as well as an updated gauge cluster. The steps on the side of the pickup box were deleted. After 1950, the two-wheel drive model was discontinued. In 1953, the model designation became 475 and the grille bars were reduced to three. A 226 cubic inch six-cylinder 6-226 model was introduced in 1954, and sales of 475 models dropped considerably. The 6-226 was dropped in 1962 in favor of the 6-230 Tornado OHC engine.

The Willys Pickup
The Willys PickupThe truck was originally sold as a 1-ton 4wd/2wd with a 1/2-ton 2wd becoming available in 1950 (model 473HT). The 2wd half and one ton trucks were discontinued in 1951 and sold as 4wd only. The load capacity was later upgraded but the truck was still sold as a 1-ton pickup.

Ford F-Series Super Duty

Ford F-Series Super DutyHigh-Tech Hauler: Using Technology For Grunt Work

Heavy-duty trucks are the workhorses of the truck world. Capable of towing nearly 20,000 pounds (as much as 24,600 if you include the F-450), these are the pickups that haul huge loads, are built to survive the rough stuff, and see more than their share of dirt, grime, and hard labor. So it's a little strange to look at them as being high-tech vehicles. In fact, "high-tech" may be the last phrase you think of to describe them. However, that is starting to change, especially with regard to the 2011 Ford Super Duty. Ford recently gave us a sneak peek at the next F-250/350/450, and while it may not look dramatically different from what you see at dealerships today, a lot has changed under the skin to make it more capable, more efficient, quieter, and more reliable than it was before.

The overall appearance of the Super Duty has not changed all that much. But there are differences. Take a look at the nose: The headlights and side-marker lights have been restyled, as has the bumper. The grille now has two large bars, much like the three-bar grille first seen in the Super Chief concept Ford unveiled at the Detroit auto show in 2006, and there's a much larger Blue Oval up front. The hood is also new, featuring a more pronounced dome. Inside the cab, there's a new 4.2-inch LCD screen within the gauge cluster that displays trailer brake control gain, an inclinometer, fuel economy, trailer data, and more, and it can be customized to show what information you want to see. Also new to the interior is a flow-through console that includes two 12-volt powerpoints and a 110-volt inverter.

Under the hood, though, is the most significant change to the Super Duty: the engines. An all-new diesel engine will make its debut, and it was designed, engineered, tested, and built by Ford. It's a 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8, with a compacted graphite iron engine block instead of gray cast iron. CGI is a stronger material, one that Ford has successfully used in other markets and is implementing here for the first time. Use of CGI also helps reduce the overall weight of the new engine, said to be about 160 pounds lighter than the outgoing 6.4-liter.

The cylinder heads are made of aluminum, as opposed to last year's iron. The 6.7 uses what Ford calls a Single-Sequential Turbocharger. As Adam Gryglak, Large Diesel Engine Engineering Program manager explains: "The Single-Sequential Turbo [SST] design harnesses the power of two compressors and one turbine in a single housing. The double-sided compressor provides airflow capability across the entire engine operating range, matching the performance of twin turbo systems. The SST design offers the fast response of a small turbocharger, as well as the increased airflow to produce more horsepower, similar to a larger turbocharger. The double-sided compressor wheel operates sequentially, as one side of the wheel flows air at low engine speeds and both sides of the wheel compress air at higher engine demand."

The intake and exhaust are completely different for 2011, with the exhaust brought inboard (in the valley) and the intake outboard. This move was made to improve throttle response and, because the overall surface area of the exhaust system is smaller, it reduces the heat transfer to the engine compartment. Its compact size makes the heat easier to manage and also increases stiffness to reduce vibration.

Fuel delivery now comes through piezo injectors, which can deliver up to five events per cylinder, and fuel is delivered at up to 30,000 psi. Use of these injectors helped Ford engineers greatly reduce typical diesel engine noise, and this engine is noticeably quieter than its predecessor. To meet 2010 federal emissions requirements, the engine is backed by an SCR system, which uses an aftertreatment of Diesel Exhaust Fluid to reduce NOx emissions. The DEF tank can be refilled by the owner (DEF is readily available), and will need it about as often as regular service intervals. Ford hasn't yet released power numbers, but they are said to be "significantly higher" than the 350 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque of the outgoing model. Fuel efficiency is said to be better as well. The 6.7 is capable of running on B20.

On the gas-powered side, buyers will have a choice of the 6.8-liter V-10 (at least for now), and an all-new 6.2-liter V-8. This 6.2 replaces the three-valve, 5.4-liter V-8. We don't know horsepower and torque numbers yet, but in the Raptor it's supposed to put out an estimated 400 horsepower (as opposed to the 5.4's 300), an estimated 400 pound-feet of torque (compared with 365 in the outgoing 5.4), and is said to provide better fuel economy.

Click to view GalleryThe SOHC V-8 uses roller-rocker shafts, variable cam timing, two spark plugs per cylinder, dual knock sensors, and more efficient airflow. The 6.2 and 6.7 will be backed a new 6R140 six-speed TorqShift transmission. The new transmission helps improve fuel economy and provides a new option: live drive PTO. You can use the PTO when the engine is running as a source of auxiliary power. There's also an integrated exhaust brake.

Even though the new Super Duty is still based on a version of the current generation's frame, a lot of work has been done to cater to those who tow and those who haul. As is the case with horsepower and torque numbers, Ford has not yet announced the towing and payload capacities of the new truck-although they are said to be higher than those of the outgoing model. Ride, handling, and steering have been improved for 2011.

Ford is now offering a factory installed fifth-wheel as an option on longbed trucks. It adds a crossmember above the rear axle, a seven-pin connector in the pickup box, and a precut hole in the bed-which comes with a fitted plug when the truck isn't being used for towing. And the factory fifth-wheel has been durability tested with a 24,000-pound trailer in tow.

Suspension has been modified to improve ride, and according to the engineers at Ford, there will now be less of a difference in loaded/unloaded ride. Another feature that's new for 2011 is the use of new brake electronics, and with that, standard hill-ascent control (applies brakes to prevent rollback when starting uphill from a stop) and hill-descent control, included with the optional off-road package. Trailer sway control and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control are standard on all SRW trucks.
